Vidurniti (With English and Hindi Translation)

The Viduraniti purports to be Vidura’s exhaustive dissertation on the ancient ‘Niti’ of India. It sets forth in mellifluous terms human values and ideals like righteousness, spirituality, flawless conduct, non-violence, forgiveness / forbearance, self restraint, human action, kingly duties, worldly wisdom, which were included under the omnibus concept of Niti, and, which, if imbibed, serve to make life more meaningful, vibrant and majestic.

The Niti in the Viduranîti has been ingeniously set in the framework of Polity, which aims to lead the ‘blind’ Dhṛtarāṣtra to the path of justice. That may be construed, in a limited sense, to be one of its objectives.

The Viduraniti is distinct from the majority of the Niti texts on counts more than one. It seeks to present in the garb of Vidura’s discourse a philosophical concept of great worth, which lays down a way of life enlivened by such high ideals as unswerving commitment to action, human endeavour, faultless conduct, probity and compassion, repudiating in the process such negative notions as asceticism, fatalism and indolence that eat into the vitals of the society. Elevation of man is what the Viduraniti aims at, and the text is replete with sterling precepts to realise it.

वैदिक ग्रंथ विदुरनीति: प्राचीन भारतीय नीति पर महात्मा विदुर का विस्तृत प्रवचन है। इसमें धर्म, अध्यात्म, सदाचार, अहिंसा, क्षमा, त्याग, कर्मशीलता, राजधर्म, लोकव्यवहार आदि उन जीवन मूल्यों तथा आदर्शों का अमृत तुल्य निरूपण है, जिनका समाहार प्राचीन मान्यता के अनुसार नीति के अन्तर्गत होता है, और जिन्हें आत्मसात् करने से जीवन अधिक सार्थक तथा उदात्त बनता है।

विदुरनीति की नीति राजनीति के बृहत् परिप्रेक्ष्य में प्रस्तुत की गयी है, जिसका उद्देश्य मोहान्ध धृतराष्ट्र को न्याय के मार्ग पर प्रवृत्त करना है। सीमित अर्थ में उसे विदुरनीति का साध्य भी माना जा सकता है। विदुरनीति सामान्य नीति-ग्रन्थ नहीं है।

विदुर के महिमाशाली प्रवचन के व्याज से इसमें एक विशिष्ट दार्शनिक मत का प्रतिपादन किया है। उसके द्वारा नीतिकार ने समाज-विरोधी वैराग्य, भाग्यवाद, कर्मत्याग आदि भावों का निराकरण कर पुरुषार्थ, पराक्रम, कर्मठता, सच्चारित्र्य आदि आदर्शों से अनुप्राणित एक ओजस्वी जीवन-पद्धति का सूत्रपात किया है, जिससे समाज का सर्वविध संवर्धन होता है। मानव का उत्थान विदुरनीति का चरम लक्ष्य है । विदुरनीति में उसी के तेजस्वी सूत्र समाहित हैं।
